Western Blot Blocking Solution is specifically designed for western blotting using fluorochrome conjugated antibodies. Pure nitrocellulose membrane is recommended for maximum performance. Other membranes, such as PVDF or nitrocellulose embedded in a support can be used, but may generate elevated backgrounds. Protein should be transferred from gel to membrane using standard protocols. Blocking buffer can be used for membrane blocking and to dilute both primary and secondary antibodies. The Blocking Solution is a high-performance blocking reagent designed for saturating free binding sites on plastic surfaces or other protein binding surfaces and for minimizing nonspecific binding to surfaces in immunoassays. It is ideal for assays that require high reproducibility and low coefficients of variation, such as assays for pre-clinical and clinical studies, production of high quality diagnostics or measurement of precious specimens. The Blocking Solution is based on highly purified casein that has been chemically modified for maximum adsorption efficiency and a dense blocking layer. By incubating a surface with The Blocking Solution, such as a microtiter plate or western blotting membrane, free spaces on the surface are saturated by the components of this blocker. This minimizes unwanted binding of the analyte or the detection antibody to the surface, avoiding background and improving sensitivity of the assay.

SmartBlock™ is a BSA-free, peptide-based blocker for saturating free binding sites on plastic surfaces or other protein binding surfaces, removing background and preventing unwanted binding. This reagent was produced by chemically modifying peptides in a specific process that resulted in a peptide solution with strong blocking characteristics. SmartBlock™ has high lot-to-lot consistency that had previously only been obtained by synthetic blockers. For many assays, SmartBlock™ is an economical and reliable alternative to BSA-containing solutions. Problems caused by BSA within blockers, such as BSA-interactions and cross reactivities, can be eliminated by using SmartBlock™.
